– [Voiceover] In this video I’m gonna show you how you can filter, segment, and view your data in Google Analytics to unclutter the data you are analyzing. All and more coming up, so let’s dive in. Hi there, and welcome to another video of measureschool.com, where we teach you the data driven way of digital marketing. My name is Julian and in this video, I’m going to show you how you can make sure that you are looking at the right data and how to filter out all the unnecessary stuff that you are seeing. So, I’ll show you ten ways to filter, segment, and view your data in Google Analytics. Number one, let’s start right with the date range. So, up here you have the date range and you can simply select the date range that you want to have a look at and your data will be filtered down to only that date range. Now, pro tip here, a short cut, you can at any point press the D button and then put in a number, such as D seven, which will filter our reports to the last seven days or D 30, which will filter our reports to last 30 days. Number two, chose your right reports. We have a lot of built in reports in Google Analytics that Google Analytics gives us by default and they show us the data in a segmented view. So, if you wanna look at our traffic sources, we can go into the source medium report, for example, and see a filtered data set this way. There are many other different reports. I would encourage you to check out the different information that you can see within the different reports, if you are not familiar with all the different built in reporting that Google Analytics gives you. Number three, let’s drill down. If you are in one of your favorite reports and your table actually has links, you can click on these links and see only that data, and filter down only to that data set, and even get more information if there’s more available beneath this dimension. But if you only wanna look at this one table, you can always click through and, at some point, there will not be a link available to drill down even further. Another great way to only look at the data set that you want to look at. Number four, search filtering. IF you have your report ready in a table, you have a search functionality up here, which takes a normal or Regex input and if you click enter, your report will automatically be filtered down to your search query. You also have an advanced option to your disposal, where you can connect different filter options and also turn your search around to exclude your matching option in here. The real power comes through Regex and if you want to find out more about this check out our Regex video at Measure School. Number five, custom segments. So, what if you have an awesome search here that we want to put over to our other reports? Well, we can use custom segments for that and if you want to find out more about custom segments, check out our custom segments video, where you can easily add a custom segment, build your own custom segment, or use one of the built in custom segments to compare different traffic sources or put over a search that you have done into a new report. Number six, dimension change. So, have you ever noticed these little links up here? Well, they define the primary dimension that you are looking at right here, but there are also other options here for different reports because each data set has different dimensions available, and we can change the primary dimension up here so we can see our data in a different way. There’s also the content grouping option, which you can configure and if you want to find out more about this, check out our content grouping video. Which brings us to number seven, Secondary Dimensions. Sometimes you are looking at the right dimension here, but you want to have some extra information correlated with another dimension and you can actually drill down on this secondary dimension in most reports with the secondary dimension option and automatically your data will be enhanced and you will be able to see the primary and secondary dimension in your report. Number eight, Sorting and Weighing. You can easily sort a table in Google Analytics by clicking on the metric up here and all the metrics will be sorted accordingly. Unfortunately, sometimes, especially percent values, don’t always make sense because there’s not enough volume to draw any insights, but you have, also, the option up here as the sort type of percentage values of weighted, which will put your data into a little bit more context, so you can find out which pages, for example, have a very high bounce rate that you should investigate in. Number nine, building customized reports or dashboards. The mother of all customizations of these reports is under the customized option, where you’ll be put into the custom report tab and you can drill down, change, and define filters as you see fit. If you like what you see, you could also add it to a dashboard that you have defined. A great way to see only the relevant data that you might want to see. We come to number ten, which is the mother of all filtering: profile filters. Now, if you want to prevent any kind of data coming to your account in the first place, you can always go into your admin section under the view settings you have filter options that you can define in order to exclude your own traffic, spam traffic, and other filters that you can custom design in order to keep your data clean and usable.
